How To: Let's Make a Highlighter Stick!

This was supposed to be a yellow-y corrector stick - the kind you use to dab here and there to conceal unwanted reddishness. Not that I have a lot of reddishness, but I wanted to try out a few ingredients, and this fit the bill.

The original recipe was for a trio of 3 correctors (one of which is green), but I only used the part concerning the yellow corrector.

I followed Aroma Zone's recipe to a T (or is that tea? or tee?), yet the end product came out not as a corrector, but as a highlighter.

And you know what? That's kind of ok.
I can use a highlighter.
Maybe you can too, so let's get busy!

Formula

60 % melt and pour base
10 % titanium dioxide in oil (a white paste sold by Aroma Zone)
15% base powder mixture
5% silica microspheres
1 % yellow oxide
0.5% foundation pigment mix (golden sand)
0.8% light reflecting powder

How does this translate to a single lip-balm-sized tube in weight?
6 gr melt and pour base
1 gr titanium dioxide in oil (a white paste sold by Aroma Zone)
1.5 gr base powder mixture
.5 gr silica microspheres
0.1 gr yellow oxide
0.05 gr foundation pigment mix (golden sand)
0.8 gr light reflecting powder

Before we go any further:
I doubled up the yellow oxide (and it still didn't turn out yellow-y), so you may want to add an additional 0.1 gr of yellow oxide right now.

Method

  • Melt the base and titanium dioxide paste slowly over low heat
  • Mix the powders until thoroughly mixed. I sifted them together numerous times using a dedicated tea sieve.
  • Add powders to melted fats
  • Stir thoroughly
  • Transfer to container

Here's a peek at the worktable just after pouring.
A lip balm case usually holds about 5 ml
This recipe makes 10 ml
There is not enough after pouring etc to fill 2 cases, so don't even go there. Check the little pot on the table – that's the amount of extra you get. You have to expect some loss of product when making minute amounts such as this. I was working in a doll-sized beaker using teensy measuring instruments and my super-teensy scale.

How it works

I'm quite pleased with the result, but can't for the life of me figure out how they could call this a yellow corrector in the original recipe..
