Glycerine - Uses and Properties

Even though glycerine has been a staple in my stockroom for ages, it has remained one of those 'background ingredients'.

But that all changed this year.

These past few months, glycerine has made its way into a front and center position due to a series of glycerite how-to's on this blog.

Since you ask.

A glycerite is an extract made with herbs (flowers, or other substance) using glycerine as the main medium of extraction – a glycerine extract, if you will.

That picture up there is a lemon glycerite being strained (and yes, it smells deliciously of fresh lemon).

My recent glycerite how-to's have been so popular with you lovely readers that I have gotten all kinds of feedback and questions from you, so today we're going to take a closer look at glycerine.

LisaLise's Guide to Cosmetic Clays

Clay is a fabulous and incredibly diverse ingredient to work with. Clays are great in masks, cleansers, color cosmetics – even emulsions and toothpaste (something we'll be getting into a little later on around here).

There are so many clays with so many different names that it can be hard for a clay-newbie (yes, that is an expression I just made up) to decide where to start.

Several of you have asked me for a quick overview of the most common clays used in skin and hair care products, so today – just for you – we're going to get down and dirty with clay!

LisaLise's Guide to Cosmetic Clays

  • Bentonite
  • Diatomaceous Earth
  • French Green Clay
  • French Illite Clays
  • Fuller's Earth
  • Kaolin
  • Rhassoul

How To: Blueberry Glycerite

There have been glycerites galore around here lately, and before the summer season disappears completely, let's make one more, luscious, lovely extract with glycerine.

Because we can.

We're getting a bit advanced with this one, because blueberries can be a bit tricky to work with, but you can totally do this, so get out your equipment and let's get busy with blueberries!

Tattoos, Skincare and a Man on a Mission

Although I have never had a tattoo, a couple of years ago I developed a special-order product for after-tat skin care. During the process of creating Tattoo Soothe Skin Mist, I got acquainted with the world of ‘getting inked’.

One thing that struck me at that time (and doesn’t seem to have changed much since) was the general lack of information about pre and after-tat skincare – everywhere!

But that is starting to change, thanks to the gentleman you see above.

Meet Dan Hunter – he's all about skincare – particularly in relation to tattoos.

Earlier this year, Dan launched Authority Tattoo which is quickly gaining recognition and attention from folks all over the tattoo industry.

I asked Dan if he would share his story with me, and he kindly agreed to let me share it with you.

DIY Spa Day - Tips for Serious Self Pampering

Today, we're going to pamper ourselves silly!

Recently, I was interviewed by a lovely lady named April for the American publication, Natural Awakenings. She asked me to share some of my best tips for DIY spa treatments that could be enjoyed at home with simple-yet-effective, easy to source ingredients.

How could I possibly say no to that? The interview inspired me to gather all the tips into this post - just for you!

Many of these are covered in more detail in separate blog posts – there are links to each post.
