Pressing Eyeshadows - Tips and Tricks

It's a sure sign of Spring! As soon as the weather gets milder (and days get longer), pigments are mixed, binder is prepared and I get giddy about making colored make-up.

Above is my latest pressed eyeshadow palette. For this batch, I've tried out a new base powder and have tweaked my binder formula.

Here's how this collection of pressed eye shadows came to be, along with a few of my best powder-pressing tips and tricks.

Infused Oil with Calendula - Straining and Bottling

A few weeks ago, I showed you how to begin a brew of infused oil. This lovely mixture has been brewing for 2 full months now, so it's time to strain it and start using it.

Are Essential Oils Endocrine Distruptors? Maybe Not So Much

We're going to a science lab today, but stick with me – it's going to be interesting, a little thought provoking, and only a little bit nerdy.

In recent years, lavender, tea tree, and several other essential oils have been attributed with such dubious abilities as being endocrine disruptors (read: they mess with hormones).

Titanium Dioxide - Pure as the Driven Snow?

Not long ago, I met a lady at a dinner party who mentioned at one point that she did everything she could to avoid titanium dioxide.

"Really?" I asked, "for what reason?"

"Because it's toxic" she replied, looking at me as if I had just dropped in from another planet.

I was a little surprised.

I was actually also a little impressed.

Titanium dioxide is a pretty difficult substance to avoid. Just glancing around the room, I made a mental note of things containing titanium dioxide; the white napkins on the table, the tablecloth, the white walls, her white belt and matching baubles, the serving bowls on the table, and the tattoo on her arm were all likely candidates.

I didn't have the heart to mention this to her. I didn't want to cause her any more distress than she already seemed to have about titanium dioxide. Her comment inspired me to do a bit of digging though.

Almond Butter - A Second Chance

OK. I might have been a bit hasty. After my initial reaction to the 'almond butter' (from this post), I decided to go back and give it a second chance.

After all, we're testing butters here, so even a hybrid grainy butter product deserves a shot at lotion bar greatness.
