Do You Tattoo? Then This is for You.

Having a tattoo transforms the skin. Not just because the skin is decorated, but because it is continuously punctured – invaded with needles and ink. I've noted several tattoo artists (and folks with tattoos) refer to freshly tattooed skin as 'a large open wound'.

Testing Tinctures - Rooibos

This past Fall, there were several new tinctures brewing in my stockroom that are now strained, bottled, and actively being tested in a few of my products. One of these is an old fave of mine as a tea, but brand new to me in tincture form – rooibos.

Above is my first test with it: Rose Skin Drench and Tonic. It's been in use daily for the past 3 weeks and I can already safely say that rooibos is (also) fabulous as a tincture.

Almond Butter - Well, Not Quite

Sometimes I get so excited about discovering a new ingredient that I forget to read the fine print before ordering. My recent purchase of almond butter is such an example.

Which Preservatives

People ask me which preservatives I use in my own products. There were a few of these I haven't yet written about in detail (it's on my to-do list – promise).

Meantime, here's a list of the preservatives I use and/or have used in my products.

What Vine and the Better Butter Test Caused

A very lovely lady named Nancy commented on a post I did on Vine not too long ago. The post (below) was a quick view of 5 lotion bars – fresh out of the lab and ready for testing.

Nancy had nearly used up her own favorite lotion bar with her 'must have' ingredient –  lanolin – and her supplier was no longer available.

When she saw I was working on lotion bars, she sprang into action. It wasn't too terribly long before Nancy's lotion bars with lanolin were being packaged and sent.

A Look at the LisaLise Product Testing Department

Developing and testing products keeps me busy with all kinds of fun and thoroughly enjoyable chores.

Here are a few of the products I am working on at the moment. Some of these are personalized versions of staple products (like some of the things you'll find on my website), some are test batches of brand new products, and some are ongoing ingredients tests.

Lab Tips - Cleaning Fats From Beakers

Any product requiring a large percentage of melted butters and waxes both can and will leave a layer of product on the inside of your equipment that can be a major chore to remove. Fats and waxes don't just magically melt away with a bit of detergent and water.

Lately, I've been testing a lot of different butters, and the clean-up after my latest test: 5 different butters in 5 different lotion bars in 5 different containers, reminded me to share this little tip with you.

The Better Butter Test

Butters have been my passion this winter. Getting re-aquainted with lotion bars sparked off a quest for the ideal lotion bar butter.

Mango, kanga, kokum, cocoa, almond – which is best? Which is smoothest? Most moisturizing? Most easy to work with? Most wonderfully scented? Most neutral? Which butter can turn a simple lotion bar into a luxury skin care item?

To compare, a test batch of 5 lotion bars was made.

Here's how it all came together.

How To Make a Face Wash With Flowers, Dirt, and Food 2

In the last face wash with dry ingredients, we combined lavender and cornflower with oats to make a cleanser for all skin types (link below). This time we're doing a super mild mixture for sensitive, dry, and mature skin. This will also work well with combination skin. If you like chamomile, this mixture is for you.

Let's get started, shall we?
