Plant-based Silicone? Yes Indeedy!

Who would have thought it, but according to my supplier, it is possible to achieve silicone-like smoothness and glossy shine with a non-greasy, silky feel in cosmetics and hair care products – without using silicone!

Introducing Coco Silicone (INCI: coco caprylate).

Guess Where it Comes From?

Yeah, I know you guessed it in a flash when you saw the 'coco' part of the name, and you were 100% correct. It's sourced from coconut.

Technically, coco silicone is the ester of caprylic acid with fatty alcohols from coconut oil.

Who's Ester?

Esters are formed by condensing an acid with an alcohol. Esters are all over the place. Almost all naturally occuring oils (and fats) are the fatty acid esters of glycerine (also known as glycerol).

So, Plant-based and Functional Too?

So they claim. I've been playing around with this ingredient and I have a few things planned (think curls). I promise to update.

Comments

There is also a quite new, thus not so popular yet ingredient called ACB Bamboo Bioferment which is really plant-based silicone. I'm really looking forward to trying this one some day :)

tell me where you get it and I'll ship you my world famous Sour Cream Cake all the way across the Atlantic. I swear!!!! I have been looking for that. I've found Velsan Soft and I love it!! truly, it's a miracle, but to accompany it, the Broccoli oil smells too much like the plant, and it needs 1.5%. Turns out that's the point it really starts to smell like broccoli.

I need something natural to go with the Velsan. Also, Enovik has a natural, plant derived Nylon 12, that is amazing. I've done extensive tests with powdered cosmetics and I am in love. Everything Nylon 10 is, but natural. I just can't afford to buy it alone right now. Poo.

Wait a minute...zaczarowany gets the pound cake. LOL! I know where to get that in the states.

zaczarowany - thanks for your input! I know have more exciting things to check out!

Nancy - you make me chuckle! You can find this product at Aroma Zone ( check under links at the bottom of this blog). Love your input on broccoli oil! I have been curious, but not quite enough to order it yet (I am seriously trying to limit myself a bit on the ingredients.. there's SO much to learn about and I need to go into a bit of depth before I feel I really know an ingredient). Thanks for sharing your thoughts. :)

Jamen, så er silicone vel snart kørt ud pået sidespor, eller...?

Hej Rikke,

Tror ikke silicon kommer til at forsvinde lige med det samme, men ja, det er da dejligt at se brugbare alternativer! :)

Sounds exciting. Please let us how this compares to silica derived silicones i.e., dimethicone/cyclomethicone, in hair and skin care products.

Hi Aesthete,
I wish I could promise you that, but I have no personal experience with silicones, and have no immediate intention of purchasing them - even for experimental use. I am happy to research and write about them though. I have a post on silicones here if you want to read more: http://www.lisaliseblog.com/2011/03/whats-in-shampoo-about-silicones.html
