Oatmeal Cleansing Bar - Double up!

I've had a couple of requests for a version of the oatmeal cleansing bar without coconut oil. Your wish – my command.

It's doubled up so you can make one for a friend while you're at it (because that's the kind of giving and wonderful person you are)

This will make 2 bars of 100 gr. or 2 trays of 'guest soaps'.

You'll Need The Following Ingredients

44 gr (1,6 oz) cocoa butter
40 gr (1,4 oz) shea butter
55 ml (1,8 fluid oz) almond oil
25 ml (0,8 fluid oz) castor oil
60 gr (2,1 oz) white clay
20 gr (0,7 oz) raw rolled oats

Grind the oats to a powder in a handy dandy whizzing machine.

Slowly melt the cocoa butter over low heat. Remove from heat and add shea. Stir until the shea melts. Add oils and stir thoroughly.

Add clay and stir thoroughly

Add oats and stir thoroughly.

Pour into mold. I thought I would be clever and dust the bottom of the mold with oats, expecting an 'oaty-top' to appear when unmolded, but it didn't happen, so just pretend you don't see the dusting of oats in the mold.

Let set in the refrigerator overnight.

Unmold and note the almost visible decorative oaty-top.

Use and store as described in this post.

Enjoy!

I have never used a cleansing bar before, is it suppose to foam up? Can it can clog acne prone, combo-oily skin?

Thanks in advance.

Hey there Anonymous,
Because they are soap-free, these cleansing bars do not foam up at all. They are a mixture of fats (which both attract dirt and moisturize) and clays (which cleanse and nourish), so you are going to have a completely different feeling using them - it may seem a bit odd to begin with if you are used to soap-based cleansers (which often tend leave the skin dry).

You can actually leave the applied cleansing bar mixture on your face for 5-10 minutes for a cleansing and moisturizing mask effect, or just massage on and rinse off for a 'cleanse and go' effect.

If you decide to give one a try, I'd love to hear your impressions! So far, I haven't met anyone who has tried them that didn't like them.

Oops! Sorry! I forgot to answer your other question about clogging acne-prone and combo-oily skin. If you want to steer completely clear of anything that might block pores, you may want to keep coconut oil out of any cleansing bar mixture you try. Other than that, you might want to try adding either tea tree and/or lavender essential oil to your mixture. Use a max of 12 drops per 100grams of mixture (1 bar). These 2 oils are good for combo, oily and acne-prone skin. They are also well tolerated. :)

I'm thinking of switching to all natural cleansers and products so I'm curious about different ones. I have congested pores and I wasn't sure at first but since I've been browsing on skin and hair forums it seems like something I might want to try. Thanks for replying :)

Go for it Anonymous! You can always go back to what you did before if it turns out you don't like it, so as far as I can see, you have nothing to loose. :)

After the 24 hours are your bars still very soft? Do they break apart in your hands or are they firm? Do you have an recipes for a facial bar that is firm?

Hi Jessie,
Forgive me for this very belated reply. I'm not quite sure how I missed your comment! The bars are semi-firm (kind of like chocolate that is beginning to go soft) and are easily mashed into the hand. Thy need to be pretty soft upon application (which they are at room temp), but firmer if kept cool (stored in the fridge).

Hi Lise,

I love this recipe and your others. I'm looking forward to making this bar later in the week. 1 question- does it remove make-up? I was my face every night before bed with a soap based cleaner to take off my daily make up, could this replace that or should I use it after my regular face wash?

Hi Lise,

Im really excited about making this bar later in the week. Just 1 question, will this take off make up? Everynight i use a soap based face wash to remove make up and clean my face, could this replace that cleaner or should I use it after my make up is removed?

Thank you!

Hi Ashley! I think these are going to feel too gritty to use as eye makeup remover due to the oats, but it will remove foundation. For eye makeup, try a few drops of almond, coconut or olive oil on a moist cotton round. If you use waterproof mascara, you will need to up the oil amount.

Oh my gosh, I love love love these cleansing bars! I've made three batches now; I did the chamomile one first, which I found a touch too scratchy. Then I did the coconut free oatmeal one, which was just lovely. The real magic was the second batch of the oatmeal one...i added a little dribble of peppermint oil and poured it all into a jar. It keeps very well at room temp, none of my batches have gone off prematurely. My skin feels so smooth, moisturized, and the texture of my skin has improved drastically! I'm so happy with the results and I'm thrilled I found you and your recipes! Thank you so much, you've revolutionized my skin are regimen! I happen to be making my fourth batch now :)

Hey there Anon - well that just pleases me to no end! My skin continues to love these as well, and there are apparently quite a few other folks who do well with this method..

If you do your own cleansing bar version and would like to share your recipe, please send me a photo and your recipe and I'll add it to the Cleaning Bar catalog page.

Thanks!
:)

Hi Lise, I found this recipes about a month ago, I've been washing my face with it, and I've noticed that it's drying to my skin, otherwise I love this bar, would there be another powder to substitute the clay? Because I think this is te drying element. Thank you
LisaLise said…
Hi Anna, you could try switching the amount of oats with the amount of clay and see if that doesn't make a difference. :)

Hi Lise! Love your blog...

Was wondering if I could subs all the cocoa butter and use shea butter instead?
LisaLise said…
Hi Natasha - you're going to need some hard butter in here if you want a bar form. Kokum would work as well. alternatively, pour the mixture into a jar and use a spoon to scoop out a portion at a time if you want to use 100% shea

I made this recipe last night, used it this morning, and LOVE it. My skin feels so good. I followed up with a coffee infused apricot kernel oil w/MuruMuru butter. My skin loves this new way of cleaning it without stripping my skin. Thank you for a great recipe.
