Happy Baby Foam Wash And The Eye Test

There are babies and toddlers in my family that love bath time and playing in the water. Come to think of it, is there any small child that doesn't enjoy splashing around in a tub of water? Unless, of course, they get soap suds in their eyes. Then it's not so much fun.

Meet the Mask - Yellow & White Clay Skin Reviver

Yellow Clay and Kaolin is a great combo for refreshing the skin and is suitable for all skin types. The addition of honey makes this a reviving mix that leaves an immediate and visible difference. If you are able to get hold of sandalwood hydrosol and/or essential oil, the effect of this mask be even greater. This is enough for one application.

Skin Lightening with Plants and Vitamins - Update on 'C'

Here is an update on 'C' (a woman in her 50's) and the age spots we are trying to fade from her hands. Above is the 'before' picture of 'C's left hand (which is the most affected). 'C' has had these age spots for years, and says they 'seem to be growing in number as well as deepening in color'. Both 'C' and 'B' – who we are also following – requested a skin lightening product a while ago. They also both agreed to take part in this case study.

Pumpkin Seed Oil - Packed with Vitamin Power

Pumpkin Seed (INCI: Cucurbita Pepo) Oil has a heck of a lot to offer skin. It has a high content of zinc, potassium, magnesium, omega 9, 6 and 3, and is packed with vitamins such as A, beta-carotene, B2, B3 as well as a high content of essential fatty acids. It is particularly good for lifting and firming the skin, why it is recommended for body-sculpting mixes targeting the breast and buttocks areas, as well as for facial firming magic. It is also recommended for healing damaged skin and gently reviving dry and mature skin. It's one of those 'wow' ingredients that just begs to be incorporated into a skin product!

Sea Algae - Good For Hair Growth

One wouldn't think it possible for sea algae to increase hair growth, but according to my supplier, Channelled Wrack (INCI: Pelvetia Canaliculata), combined with Oarweed (INCI: Laminaria Digitata) can not only increase hair growth by up to 27%, but it can (over a 2 month period) increase the number of hairs by up to 10%. And, before you get too excited, don't expect that it can just keep on and on until you have a major-sized wig on your head. It will, however, help to optimize your own hair-growing potential and then, with continued use, keep it at its best. Basically, this sea algae combo is a natural, plant-based remedy for hair thinning and hair loss that really works. Isn't that just the coolest thing ever?

Skin Lightening with Plants and Vitamins - Update on 'B'

After a few fits and starts, I am finally able to post the first set of pictures on how Lighten Up – a new skin lightening product – is shaping up. Today we'll have a look at how this product is working for 'B' (a woman in her 30's) and the skin miscolorations on her cheek and eye area.

Body Fresh Deodorant – Now in Geranium

Geranium has just joined the line-up in the Body Fresh deodorant series and is good to go. You will find it here. PS. This pic needs to be updated, because the new containers that carry 75ml (instead of the pictured that carries 60ml) are also good to go, so I will be replacing the pics on all of the deodorants as soon as I can get it slotted into my schedule.
PPS. This deodorant will also be considered for the up and coming buddy order program.

Everything Has To Count - Especially The Water

One of the advantages of doing custom skin care products is having total control and being able to 'make every ingredient count'. It allows me to take things to the max and create the ultimate in skin-loving luxury in every product I do. If you're wondering exactly what I mean, please continue reading while I enthuse about the main and most important ingredient of all –  water!

Welcome Back Blogger!

Goodness I've missed having access to the blogger editor! Blogger has been in 'read only' mode for a few days, so if you've dropped by to have a read, you most likely haven't noticed anything. Meantime, I have been biting my nails in anticipation of the editor being reopened while the technical folks worked on whatever it was that needed working on behind the blogger scenes.
Trying to log in showed only a "Blogger is unavailable at the moment" page.... no access to my notes, posts in progress, photo upload area, stats – everything has been unaccessable... until now. Welcome back blogger - yay!

Make-up: Making Eyebrow Pencils

I used to make only a couple of makeup pencils at a time – all from scratch, but over the past couple of years I have taken to pre-making a pencil base in a 'larger quantity' (enough for about 15 slim or 5 fat pencils) and storing the mixture in my ingredients fridge. When I need to do a pencil or 2, I grab the base and go from there. Here is how I made a couple of eyebrow pencils the other day.

Skin Lightening with Plants and Vitamins - Update

It's been a while since I started this case study on skin lightening with vitamins and plants. We are following 2 ladies: 'B' is in her 30's and looking to fade some miscolorations on her face around the eye and cheek area, and 'C': a lady in her 50's, is looking to fade age spots on her hands. The intention was to photograph both ladies each week and post the results and feedback from both. As luck would have it, life (and incredibly demanding ingredients) decided to get in the way of these plans. We've run into a couple of snags, and several batches.

Natural Surfactants - Soapwort

One wouldn't think it possible to
wash anything with a plant.
In the last installment on natural surfactants I discussed a bit about how plants can have the built-in ability to cleanse – because of their saponin content. Today, I'll discuss a saponin-rich herb that I have worked with for many years, and although it isn't a star ingredient in any one product I do, I would be hard pressed to bid it farewell.

About the Name(s)
This herb (INCI: Saponaria officinalis) has an impressive list of common names. I normally refer to it as Soapwort, but you can choose your favorite from any of the names on this list. They all refer to the same plant:

Caffeine Sculpting Gel - Still Tweaking

Double Shot Caffeine Sculpting Gel: Batch 4
About a month ago, I started focusing on working with caffeine as an active ingredient – just to see what it could do and if it was something I wanted to start including in my product line. So far, things are looking very promising. Aside from actually behaving as an active ingredient should (with visible difference after use), it's turning out to be a wonderful ingredient to work with as well.

Keratin - Protein Power For Hair

Keratin, todays star ingredient, doesn't really rate very high on the sexiness scale, but is vital to hair, skin, and nails. As a matter of fact, it is hair (and nails). Hair consists mainly of keratin – a family of fibrous proteins. Did you know your hair was over 80% keratin? As for skin, it is the presence of keratin in our epidermis that makes our skin nearly waterproof. By its very nature, keratin is an excellent ingredient for hair care.

Chemical Free? Give Your Head a Shake!

The other day I was reminded of a disturbing TV ad from about a year ago. The ad was for a 'natural' cosmetic series. It was simply put together – a continuous list of chemical names rolled across the screen, similar to how movie credits are usually presented. Each chemical name had the word 'no' in front of it. As the names rolled by, a soothing female voice explained how healthy and chemical free this new, all-natural product series was, and that all of the dangerous chemicals you were seeing on the screen were nowhere to be found in this wonderful series. The voice further explained how your family could now feel perfectly safe and chemical free. At last – security and peace of mind were available in the 'all natural' contents of these products.

Body Fresh Deodorant - Testing Geranium

I've been trying out some new liquid bases in the Body Fresh Deodorant formula, and for the past few months, testing has been ongoing with a version with geranium. The other 2 deodorants in the series (Lavender and Lemon Balm – also called Melissa) are pretty 'unisex' in scent and seem to be equally popular with both ladies and gents. The geranium version, however, is specifically geared for ladies. I have felt the need to expand the selection because, happily, the Body Fresh Deodorants are growing in popularity. The geranium version has a fresh-but-floral quality to it that is distinctly feminine. I'm so pleased with this one that I have already replaced my previous fave with it. It shouldn't be long before it is available at my website.
PS: If the new containers test well, the geranium deodorant will also be available in a 75ml container.

Hydrosol Mix of the Week - Rose and Sage

One of the reasons I never seem to lose my passion for working with hydrosols is their ability to constantly surprise and delight. Sometimes a combination will 'sound great on paper', but the actual mix will take an unexpected turn – or disappoint. But then, there are those times when you find yourself doing a combination you normally wouldn't even consider – and the result sweeps you off your feet. I have had to acknowledge recently that there are 2 hydrosols I cannot do without. This leaves me with the option of using them separately forever, or trying to mix them and seeing what happens. The 2 hydrosols are rose and sage.
